IEEE International Conference On Communications In Sydney

The latest advances in next generation wireless technologies will be discussed this week at the 2014 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC 2014) in Sydney.

Held at the Hilton Sydney from 10 to 14 June, IEEE ICC 2014 attracted some 1,400 international experts who heard from the Australian Minister for Communications, Malcolm Turnbull MP, at the conference's opening ceremony (11 June). The conference has attracted a large contingent from North America and China.

Business Events Sydney (BESydney) worked with the bureau's ambassador and IEEE ICC 2014 General Chair, Farzad Safaei, Professor and Director of the ICT Research Institute at the University of Wollongong, to bring the conference to Sydney.

BESydney CEO Lyn Lewis-Smith warmly welcomed the 1,400 international communication technology professionals to Sydney, Australia's digital headquarters.

"This year's conference theme is 'Communications: The Centrepoint of the Digital Economy' and I cannot think of a better destination for these experts to meet than in Sydney," said Ms Lewis-Smith.

"New South Wales is home to the country's largest ICT industry, with over 60 per cent of Australia's ICT regional headquarters and operation centres based here. Meeting in Sydney offers delegates the chance to network with global players such as Microsoft, Google, IBM, Salesforce, Amazon Web Services and Oracle, who have all chosen Sydney for their Asia Pacific offices.

"This is an exciting time for the global ICT sector, where new research and breakthroughs are defining the way we connect as a global community. Outcomes from this Sydney conference may define how we communicate in the future."

Professor Safaei said that for five full days, experts representing nearly every industrial nation will convene to showcase their newest research, services and applications in an environment dedicated to learning and expanding global communications knowledge.

"The ICC is a flagship conference of the IEEE Communications Society and represents one of the largest global gatherings of researchers and industry professionals in the field of communications. This year's conference is no exception and brings together more than 1,400 delegates from around the globe to discuss the latest advances in this vibrant and constantly evolving field.

"This will be performed in one of the world's loveliest cities and within miles of iconic treasures and cultural attractions like Darling Harbour, the Royal National Park, the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Queen Victoria Building and Bondi Beach," he added.

IEEE ICC 2014 began with 16 tutorials and workshops covering areas such as 'Communications in Underground and Confined Environments', 'Machine to Machine Communications', and 'Next Generation Global Internet of Things'. The rest of the conference will be highlighted by a comprehensive agenda of industrial and business forums detailing the latest advances in communications technologies and policies.

Guest speakers include the Director of the Centre for Communications Systems Research and 5G Innovation Centre at The University of Surry, UK, Professor Rahim Tafazolli and Emeritus Laureate Professor at the University of Melbourne, Rod Tucker.
