In Focus: Doing Business In Darwin, Australia

Darwin Convention Centre is the focal point of three business-focussed events this October and November, underscoring the Northern Territory's staunch "open for business" attitude as a combined total of 3,500 attendees converge in the capital city.

The 52nd Australia-Japan Joint Business Conference to be held 12th-14th October takes centre stage, drawing luminaries from the business communities of both countries. It is the premier Australia-Japan business conference, which is held annually and alternating between locations in Australia and Japan. This is the first time that the Business Conference will be held in Darwin -- securing the major international event, the most important economic summit to be held in Darwin, was a coup for the Territory.

The Conference will bring together senior business executives and government officials from Japan and Australia for discussions on a wide range of business topics and to explore future trade opportunities between the two countries. Prime Minister Tony Abbott is the invited Guest of Honour and speaker at the conference dinner. The Hon Ian Macfarlane MP, Minister for Industry, will be a Special Guest of the conference.

Nine plenary sessions at the Convention Centre will tackle a diverse range of issues including economic integration, energy security and Asia's food future. Some of Japan's largest corporations such as Nippon Steel, Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Kawasaki, Toyota, Bank of Tokyo, NEC, Japan Airlines and Inpex will be represented by senior personnel at the conference, which has attracted 300 delegates".

Darwin Convention Centre has also been chosen by the Small Business Association of Australia (SBAA) as the venue host for their annual national conference to be held 19th-22nd November, citing Darwin as "the unofficial capital of Northern Australia". The Conference aims to map a long term plan and direction for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

SBAA is Australia's premier small business organisation dedicated to promoting world's best practice in business to Australia's over two million SMEs. Slated to attend the conference gala dinner at the Centre are SBAA's patron and Hancock Prospecting Chairman Gina Rinehart, NT Chief Minister Adam Giles and other State and Federal Government ministers and MPs.

The NT Department of Business has joined forces with the Chamber of Commerce NT in the 20th October Business Month (OBM) to deliver an expanded program this year, with Darwin Convention Centre hosting three of its large-scale events. Aimed at providing Northern Territory businesses with business development and networking opportunities, OBM features over 130 events, comprising award ceremonies, business breakfasts, cocktail receptions, leadership events, conferences and workshops.

OBM Darwin's official opening was held at the Convention Centre 1st October with keynote speaker Mark Bouris -- successful entrepreneur and Executive Chairman of Yellow Brick Road Wealth Management -- as one of the attractions that drew 1,200 attendees. Fitness guru and motivator Michelle Bridges will lead the charge as OBM's crowd drawer on 7th October, which is expected to bring an audience of 1,500 to the Centre. Approximately 250 guests are expected to attend OBM's 20th Anniversary Gala Business Dinner featuring popular sports presenter Mark Beretta.

"Our events calendar is a clear indication that the business world is leveraging the Territory's strengths within Australia and the broader region of Asia," said Darwin Convention General Manager Janet Hamilton.
