Engineers Australia Convention - The Largest Engineering Event Held In The Southern Hemisphere

 Kicking off in under a week, the inaugural Engineers Australia Convention 2014 will be one of the largest engineering events ever held in the southern hemisphere, bringing together the engineering profession to focus on the future direction of the industry in Australia.

Taking their scale and mission seriously, Convention 2014 will be one of the greenest events ever held at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), itself the first convention centre in the world to be awarded a 6 Star Green Star environmental rating by the Green Building Council of Australia.

By ensuring Convention 2014 leaves minimal environmental impact it sends a clear message that we take this responsibility seriously, reflecting the same best practice adopted by the engineering profession."

With the support of sustainability experts MCI Australia and MCEC, event organisers have created a Sustainable Event Policy and Supplier Code of Conduct and set ambitious targets for the event including:

- 80 per cent waste diversion rate
- 0 per cent food waste produced
- 93 per cent Victorian sourced produce and 100 per cent Australian sourced food
- 100 per cent Australian sourced cold beverages
- 100 per cent of event signage (excluding banners) electronic, recyclable or reusable
- Measuring carbon emissions

To achieve the event's sustainability targets, Convention 2014 has put initiatives in place to reduce water, food and energy resources, while supporting the local community and healthy lifestyles, including:

- Donating surplus food to local charity organisations Secondbite and OzHarvest
- Delegate lanyards made from recycled PET bottles
- Part-used batteries donated to The Royal Children's Hospital
- Lost property donated to Salvation Army (three months post event)
- Promote sustainability to exhibitors and provide a 'Guide for Sustainable Exhibitors'
- And much more

Convention 2014 uses the ISO20121 Event Sustainability Standard framework to provide a holistic sustainability focus, covering the environmental, social and economic imprint of the event.

Following the event, organisers will share an in-depth results report outlining their initiatives and the environmental and social impact of Convention 2014.

Convention 2014 will be held from Monday 24 to Friday 28 November 2014.
