Albert Cheong Is Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, Malaysia's New Group General Manager

 Sunway International Hotels & Resorts has appointed Albert Cheong as Group General Manager of Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa effective 2 January 2014, responsible for the operations of the 1,234-room multi-property hotel development within the integrated Sunway Resort City in Greater Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

With a strategic focus on guest experience, staff development and financial performance, Cheong who is supported by a senior leadership team who will oversee the full spectrum of operations for Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa. He will play a pivotal role in the refreshment of hotel products, services and programmes - including that of food and beverage facilities - to maintain a competitive edge in line with trends shaping the hospitality and travel and tourism industries, aspiring to surpass the needs and expectations of discerning global travellers and guests, and to achieve greater yield.

With sound business and financial acumen, a life-long immersion into the philosophy and understanding of customers' needs and desires, as well as a proven track record of successful leadership, Cheong is slated to take Sunway Hospitality's flagship property to greater heights.

A thirty-five (35) year hospitality industry veteran who has opened as well as managed hotels across Asia, Cheong brings with him skills and expertise in the aspects of Corporate, General, Operational and Sales & Marketing Management. He has been attached to single and multiple city cum resort properties, in addition to stand-alone and mixed-use city-centre developments comprising hotels, serviced apartments, meeting and exhibition facilities, office and apartment towers as well as retail outlets, in key and secondary cities across Asia.

Cheong also demonstrates strength in the area of brand and sub-brand development and management besides concept development and re-development, including re-engineering of business models in changed socio-political and economic landscapes.

Working and living in diverse environments in both developed and developing economies throughout Asia, in particularly Southeast Asia and Greater China, Cheong displays flexibility and adaptability towards different cultures, people management and evolving industry trends and expectations; all qualities that are of great importance in relation to Sunway Group's leadership criteria.

Prior to joining Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, Cheong spent the last three (3) years as Area General Manager with The Landmark Lancaster Hotel Group that has hotels in Bangkok and London. He was previously with Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts for close to 30 years. He has held various management positions including being General Manager of the hotel group's properties in Bali, Indonesia; Shenzhen, Wuhan and Beijing in China; Singapore; and Yangon in Myanmar.

Cheong attained his professional qualification from the School of Hotel Management, Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, USA in 1993 following the completion of a General Manager's Program as well as Professional Development Programs in Marketing, Finance, Food & Beverage and Human Resources. He is highly proficient in English as well as spoken and written Bahasa Malaysia. He is able to converse in Putonghua, Cantonese and Fujian dialects, having spent about a decade in China.
