Brazil Tourism Launches Promotional Program For Rio de Janeiro

Major sporting events provide a unique opportunity for tourism in any country. Hosting the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games, Brazil is on its way to reaching a new stage of its promotion as a global destination. To build on this, the Brazilian Tourism Board, EMBRATUR, is launching its new program to attract and promote international events in Rio de Janeiro.

To expand the program which previously concentrated on associative events the focus is now placed on sporting events. Promoting Brazil as a major world sporting event host with impressive infrastructure and global exposure creates exceptional conditions for attracting future events.

Nearly 240 international events are slated to call Brazil host and the 32 Brazilian sports federations, each linked to international bodies, will be essential partners in attracting events. "The aim is not merely to bring the events to Brazil, but to diversify the cities that host them and work on increasing the time tourists spend in the country," said Jeanine Pires, EMBRATUR president. "We are seeking to increase the volume of spending generated and benefit local economies and companies."

The main program features include coordination and compiling of candidate events, presentation of the intended host city to members of international committees, production of appropriate promotional materials for the event and sending Brazil-focused material to leaders of international associations organizing events which can potentially be held in the country in the future.

The strategy involves identifying all sports with world or regional competitions, leveraging existing sports facilities and those to be built for the 2011 Military World Games, the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

A new program, Meetings Brazil, will be coordinated for the promotion of the Meetings, Incentive, Conventions and Exhibits (MICE) segment - which generates $30 million worldwide - bringing together various businesses, in addition to sporting associations. The aim is to promote Brazil as a destination with an infrastructure capable of hosting any type of international event.
