The Exploratorium Cleared To Land At San Francisco International Airport

The San Francisco International Airport Commission today approved plans for the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to award a pop-up concession contract to the Exploratorium, an internationally-renowned museum of science, art, and human perception. The "Exploratorium @ SFO" store, slated to open April 2016, will be an extension of the museum experience which has been a San Francisco favorite since opening its doors at the Palace of Fine Arts in 1969.

"Our innovative pop-up concessions program brings the very best of the San Francisco Bay Area to SFO", said Airport Director John L. Martin. "With the addition of the Exploratorium, our Airport guests can enjoy the inspiring, creative, and thought-provoking concepts of an iconic San Francisco institution."

"We are thrilled to partner with SFO to continue to bring the philosophy of the Exploratorium and fun learning experiences to individuals all over the globe," said Julie Nunn, Director of Marketing for the Exploratorium. "We are excited that this Exploratorium store, like all our museum stores, is a reflection of the museum experience as we hand-select products that help educate and extend our mission. By integrating an exhibit component, visitors can play and learn about natural phenomena while they shop for science- and art-related products for all ages."

Since 1969, the Exploratorium has created a culture of learning through innovative environments, programs, and tools that help people nurture their curiosity about the world around them. In addition to providing a wide array of educational product offerings, the store will include conceptual and architectural elements of the museum, with exhibits built into the store design. Employees will not only be well-versed in a product assortment curated for all ages and an airport on boarding setting, but will also be able to facilitate exhibits for an optimal learning experience while visitors shop.

SFO opened its first pop-up concession space with the opening of the renovated Terminal 3, Boarding Area E in January 2014. Move-in ready spaces were created specifically to encourage small business access to the Airport, reducing the initial start-up costs that traditionally deterred such concepts. As series of six- or twelve-month leases have since rotated through the spaces, adding expanded selection of locally-sourced concessions to the Airport's nationally-recognized program of amenities.
