Direct Energy Centre Invests In Urban Reforestation
|As part of the Environmental Plan implemented by Exhibition Place, Direct Energy Centre (Toronto, Canada) undertook a significant project to convert a concrete landscape on the east side of the venue to a now environmentally conscious and esthetically pleasing green space featuring trees, multicoloured container plants, and artistic statues, completed during the International Stone Sculpture Symposium.|
This recent makeover is a part of the Urban Forestry Program, which preserves and renews the urban forest on the grounds. The initiative included the removal of blocks of concrete and replacing them with a softer surface of grass, wood chips and mulch, giving the exterior building a greener and more environmental landscape.
With the goal of environmental responsibility, in terms of energy production and waste reduction, by 2010, Exhibition Place and Direct Energy Centre have adopted a number of innovative green projects in addition to urban reforestation. North America's first urban wind turbine, lighting retrofits of over 1,900 fixtures, 100% compostable disposable dishware for food & beverage, and a waste diversion and recycling program.
Opening in September 2009 is the newest venue at Exhibition Place; Allstream Centre. A 160,000 square foot Conference Centre which is connected to Direct Energy Centre. Allstream Centre is targeting LEED Silver (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design), and features include rainwater harvesting, low VOC carpets and paint, natural light in pre-function and meeting rooms, low energy lighting and environmental HVAC systems.
