Vancouver's Bard On The Beach Shakespeare Festival Celebrates 25 Years
|It all started back in 1990 with a passionate group of young actors staging an outdoor performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream against a backdrop of ocean, mountains and sky. Today, 25 years later, Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival has grown into a Canadian theatre institution with a $4-million budget and annual attendance of more than 90,000 during its four-month run.|
To mark the 25th anniversary season, Bard on the Beach is launching a special lineup of events celebrating the festival's exceptional history. Highlights include Gazing Back: Reflecting on 25 Years at Bard (July 14, 28, August 11, September 9 and 12); Bard Explored: Lecture Series (Saturdays at 11:30 am and Mondays at 7:30 pm for the duration of the festival); Bard, Beer & Pretzels (September 8); and Will Shakespeare's ImprovMusical (September 1, 8, 9, 15 and 16).
And yet again, another summer of theatre magic will take place under Bard's signature red and white tents. A Midsummer Night's Dream comes back to the Main Stage alongside favourite The Tempest. And on the Studio Stage, Cymbeline runs in alternation with Equivocation, a contemporary comedy written by Bill Cain. Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival runs from June 11 to September 20. Adult tickets start at $33.
