Las Vegas Celebrates National Travel and Tourism Week

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) is joining the resort community to celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week on May 2 -- 10, honoring the driving force behind the Las Vegas economy.

The U.S. Travel Association established Tourism Week 32 years ago to recognize travel and tourism as a leading economic driver.

"Almost no other economy in the world depends as much on tourism as Las Vegas does, so Tourism Week is an important celebration for all of us here in Southern Nevada," said Rossi Ralenkotter, president/CEO of the LVCVA. "Tourism benefits everyone in our community, providing funding for school construction, teacher salaries, roads, parks and more."

Throughout Tourism Week, the LVCVA will be marking the celebration with several activations, headlined by an industry-wide Tourism Rally on Tuesday, May 5 at 10:30 a.m. at The LINQ promenade fountain. The entire community is asked to join the rally and show their support for the tourism industry by wearing blue.

The blue theme continues throughout the week as local buildings and businesses will be turning key features blue in support, including Las Vegas City Hall, McCarran International Airport, the Miracle Mile fountain, and the Viva Vision canopy at the Fremont Street Experience.

To honor the hard working Las Vegans who spend every day making sure the 41 million tourists who visit each year have a great time, the LVCVA will once again recognize industry workers with the Hospitality Hero awards. Nearly 60 tourism industry workers will be surprised on the job with the award.

Downtown Las Vegas will celebrate its tourism industry with a press conference on Thursday, May 7, on the Fremont Street Experience Third Street stage. Downtown industry representatives will recognize Tourism Week and make a special announcement regarding a tourism industry conference coming to Las Vegas.

Finally, on Friday, May 8, volunteers from the tourism industry will be at McCarran International Airport to welcome visitors to the destination with special blue lollipops to kick off their weekend.

Several Las Vegas entertainers recorded messages supporting the industry including Donnie & Marie, Penn & Teller, Jeff Dunham, Carrot Top, Chippendales, Claire Sinclair, the girls of Fantasy, Frank Marino, Gordie Brown, Human Nature, Jeff Civillico, cast members from LOVE, Mac King, Matt Goss, cast members of Mystere, Host Committee Chairman Oscar Goodman, Rita Rudner, dancers from Showstoppers, cast members from Zarkana, LVCVA Showgirls and Terry Fator. The public service announcements will be running on local television and radio stations, as well as all Terrible Herbst gas stations.
